Hurricane season is just around the corner and as a South Florida resident, there is nothing more important than being prepared. There are a lot of simple precautions that you can take to ensure that you, your family and your belongings remain as safe as possible during this time. it is important to evaluate your own personal circumstances and come up with the right game plan.

As a homeowner with a pool, one major concern that typically comes along with hurricane season is a lot of water. Homeowners should make sure to drain their pool as much as possible, but not too much because then if it does not rain at all it could be another issue. You can talk to your swimming pool provider to learn the best way to drain your pool and what the proper level of water is for an anticipated storm.

Debris can also be a major issue. You cannot prevent everything that can possibly occur, but by taking time to trim any extra tree limbs and branches in your yard you can prevent potential damage to your swimming pool, screen area (if applicable), home, and any equipment that you have exposed. Another form of debris can come from any pool toys, patio furniture or any other loose items that are in your yard area. Make sure to store all of these items so that they do not have the potential to become flying projectiles in case a storm was to come. This is not only dangerous to you and your home but can be dangerous to anyone around you. If you have nowhere to store these items and you have a concrete pool, then gently place them in the pool to help shield them from the winds.

If a storm is quickly approaching, then there are immediate precautions you can take. First off, make sure that all of your electrical power is shut off at the circuit breakers. Again, we remind you to never completely empty your pool. Pools that have been emptied may experience serious structural problems and could even be lifted off their foundations.
