Hurricane season is just around the corner. As a South Florida resident, there is nothing more important than being prepared despite anticipation that this season should be more mild than others. There are a lot of simple precautions that you can take in order to ensure that you and your family and loved ones remain as safe as possible during this time. There are always a lot of preventative things you can do to ensure your belongings remain as safe and secure as possible too.
One of the most major issues that typically arises along with hurricane season is flooding. Homeowners should make sure to drain their pool as much as possible, but not too much because then if it does not rain at all it could be another issue. You can talk to your swimming pool provider to learn the best way to drain your pool and what the proper level of water is. Many swimming pools also have an auto shut off so that the water does not rise too high.
Debris can also be a major issue during hurricane season. Some things you cannot prevent, but by taking time to trim any extra tree limbs and branches in your yard you can prevent possible damage to your swimming pool, screened in patio area (if applicable), home and any equipment that you have exposed. Another form of debris can come from any pool toys, patio furniture or any other loose items that are in your yard area. Make sure to store all of these items so that they do not have the potential to become flying projectiles in case a storm was to come. This is not only dangerous to you and your home, but can be dangerous to those around you as well. If you do not have anywhere to store these items and you have a concrete pool, then gently place them in the pool to help shield them from the winds.
If a storm is quickly approaching, then there are immediate precautions to take. First off, make sure that all of your electrical power is shut off at the circuit breakers. Again, we remind you to never completely empty your pool. Pools that have been emptied may experience serious structural problems and could even be lifted off their foundations.
