May has been designated as National Water Safety Month, and at Treasure Pools, we want to not only provide you with the swimming pool of your dreams, but also ensure you keep you and your loved ones stay safe. As a result of the popularity of swimming, it is important to continue educating those on safety tips so careless and preventable mistakes do not happen. This month not only represents the joys of swimming, but also the dangers and how to prevent a water-related tragedy. Here we share a few tips on how to stay safe.
Most importantly, and especially in South Florida, where we are surrounded by water, it is very important to learn how to swim. The lack of swimming ability is one of the top reasons for unintentional drownings.
We recommend starting your children off in swimming lessons at a young age, as it could very well save their lives one day. Children can drown in just two inches of water, making seemingly harmless areas of water a hazard to children. Look to your community recreation center or even find a local teacher for private or group lessons. There are many ways you and your loved ones can become safe swimmers.
Another great idea is to keep a swim buddy along with you. Swimming alone can be dangerous, but the buddy system helps to eliminate some of the concern. When swimming or supervising swimmers, make sure to avoid distractions. This seems obvious, but there are so many ways in which someone can get distracted, and it only takes a couple of seconds for something bad to happen. Although swimming can be relatively safe, we always encourage sharing safety tips. You may sweat more than you realize while you are working out in the water, so it is always important to drink plenty of fluids before and after. If you are not a strong swimmer, we also recommend having a flotation device nearby.
Stay on top of the latest safety tips and ensure that your swimming pool provider follows all codes to help add in layers of additional protection to prevent any accidents that may arise. Safe swimming!
