2012 Olymbics
As the Olympics are approaching this year in London, we wanted to share some pretty cool records and trivia tidbits that have happened throughout history. Here are a few of our favorites.

-Americans Nancy Hogshead and Carrie Steinseifer registered the first official tie in Olympic history in the 100-meter freestyle at the 1984 Olympics. They each recorded a time of 55.92. (USA Swimming)

-Tracy Caulkins is the only swimmer ever, man or woman, to own American records in every stroke. (USA Swimming)

-At the second modern Olympic Games contested in Paris in 1900, the most unusual event to be held was underwater swimming. It was decided prior to the competition that two points would be awarded for each meter swum underwater. In addition, one point was added to the scoring of each individual for every second he stayed below the surface. Much to the delight of the locals, Frenchman Charles de Venderville won the event swimming 60 meters and staying submerged for 1-min 8.4-sec. Denmark’s Peder Lykkeberg stayed underwater for a longer period, one and a half minutes, but only managed to travel 28.5 meters. This was the first and only time underwater swimming was held at the Olympic Games. (ASI)

-Lance Larson, in lane four, appeared (according to photographs) to touch first at the finish of the 1960 (Rome Olympics) 100-metre freestyle swimming event. Yet John Devitt, in lane three, was awarded the gold medal. (Indianinfo)

Let’s see who will bring home the medals this year for swimming! For more interesting swimming trivia, check out this article.

There are many swimming programs that communities offer that many of the local residents may not be aware of. When it comes to swimming, we have already discussed preventative measures that homeowners can take to prevent such accidents from happening, like drowning. Teaching your children how to swim, no matter what age, has become one of the easiest ways to prevent drownings from occurring. Communities are proactively coming together to provide these free programs to local residents and we want to spread the word!

Swimming Lessons Are Important For Everyone

The Boynton Beach City Council last week unanimously renewed an agreement with the Palm Beach County Drowning Prevention Coalition to provide free swimming lessons for poor children at the John Denson Pool at Wilson Park, 225 N.W. 12th Ave.

This is great news for Palm Beach County. Wally Majors, the city’s parks and recreation director, shared that “Florida leads the nation in drowning, so we want to do anything we can do to provide more safety for children”. Even if you do not live in Florida, there are other communities that host similar programs. Contact your swimming pool provider or local government to find out more information about these programs. You never know how much this could benefit your children and family.

For more information on the program, call Stewart’s office at (561) 616-7068 or check out this recent article from the Palm Beach Post here.

After being in business for almost 30 years, Treasure Pools and Services Inc. knows a thing or two about constructing the perfect swimming pool. There are many ways to get your dream pool, but there is only one right way. Craig Cohen guides and leads his customers so that they receive the most knowledgeable and up-to-date swimming pool. Construction has changed over the years and Craig manages to keep up with every changing trend and update to be made.

What’s New In Swimming Pool Construction

One of the big changes that many homeowners are seeing is with their plumbing. Pipes have increased in size which results in fewer leaks with new swimming pool construction and causes a better flow throughout the pool. Before, many homeowners used to experience frequent leaks due to their smaller 1 ½ inch plumbing lines. Now, these lines have grown to be as big as 3 inches which ultimately gives you better filtered water. Skimmers have also made a change. Your skimmer is now built into the pool itself, making it a lot more sturdy and durable. Drains are also becoming safer for swimmers. Instead of having one main drain, pools are now being built with two drains. You may also hear about the newer Aquastar channel main drain, which is the most up-to-date advancement where not even your hair cannot even get stuck.

Things are always changing and the construction of your swimming pool is worth learning about. If you do not put in the time or money now, you will be putting in more time and money than imaginable in the long run. Craig is always available to not only educate his customers on the construction process, but to make sure that they understand every step of the way. If you’re ready to discuss building a swimming pool, contact us today.

Getting a loan through a bank has become a very difficult task for many homeowners. Nowadays, normal financing through a regular bank is difficult because a lot of people do not have equity’s in their houses.

Alas, there is another way that homeowners are able to get money in order to have the opportunity to build a swimming pool. This is through alternate financing through an unsecured loan. With this, banks will not secure these types of loans with any security — such as your house. This gives homeowners the opportunity to make their dream come true with being able to add a swimming pool onto their homes, despite previous credit mistakes and such.

With these alternate loans, you do pay a higher interest rate, but the quicker you pay it off, the least amount of interest you end up paying. Many homeowners tend to pay these types of loans in bulk sums to dissolve the loan quicker. Note that — the better credit, the lower the interest rate will be.

There is another option. If homeowners only want to borrow part of the money for the loan, this is possible too. You are able to work with your swimming pool provider to see the best plan and amount for you.

Now what happens when there is leftover money from a loan that you may have taken out to build your dream swimming pool? The possibilities are endless! What the homeowner decides to do with the remaining money is completely up to them. It is highly recommended and popular for people to invest in additional pool accessories. For example, pool furniture, a grill, etc. Craig Cohen owner of Treasure Pools Inc. shares that as few as two years ago, people couldn’t get any financing. As the economy gets better, banks will be giving more money away and the interest rates will decrease. There is always a time and place for everyone to get a pool. Your time could be now! Contact Craig Cohen for additional information as to how this can be possible for you.

With 2012 quickly approaching, homeowners should make sure that their swimming pool codes are the most up-to-date. Some updates include changes in the main drains and the flow rate. All new pools must be built to the standard of these new codes. Pipe sizes are changing along with the suction, which ultimately gives you a better flow rate.

This all may sound like a different language to the general consumer, but it is ultimately your swimming pool contractors responsibility to update and educate you on these codes.

The provisions in the new 2012 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) were completed during the Final Action Hearing on October 31, 2011 in Phoenix. The approved changes from the 2011 codes for the 2012 codes will be published in the 2012 Editions of the International Codes.

In 2009, the International Code Council (ICC) approved the development of the first comprehensive swimming pool code coordinated with the current requirements found in the International Codes to meet the requirements of the Virginia Graeme Baker Act to upgrade pool safety.

For more information and to view the new codes, check out the International Code Council’s site.

As a swimming pool provider, we understand how important safety is at Treasure Pools and Services Inc. According to the International Life Saving Foundation, the best scientific evidence available has taught us that 1.2 million people around the world die by drowning every year, that is more than two persons per minute. From that more than 50 percent are children. There are perhaps eight to ten times that many who experience a drowning process but who reach safety alone or are rescued by their peers, by others or by lifesavers/lifeguards.

Swimming Pool Safety Tips

These statistics are not given to scare people, but to hopefully educate people on the importance of safety. To start, swimming pools should be fenced in on all sides. This is said to reduce the risk of accidental drownings by more than 80%! Nothing makes anything completely preventable, but it is always better to be safe.

First Aid Basics

As a homeowner, there are a few things that you can do to ensure that your guests are as safe as possible. In a case of any emergency, you should make sure to stay up-to-date with all of the CPR and first aid basics. Also, homeowners should make sure to provide the proper lighting and make sure that their fences meet all of the state safety requirements.
